Edwin Lee Mathews was born October 13, 1931 in Texarkana, Texas. Eddie was six years old when his family moved to Santa Barbara, California where he developed into a star high school player. Signed by the Boston Braves in 1949, he continued to shine in their farm system as a left-handed power-hitting third baseman who hit towering home runs. A natural athlete blessed with tremendous power, a rifle arm, and a durable body, Mathews was the premier third baseman of his era and a key member of the Braves teams of the late 1950s.

Curtis Charles Flood was born January 18, 1938 in Houston, Texas and raised in Oakland, California. Flood signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 1956, and played just eight games for the team in 1956-57 before being traded to the Cardinals in December 1957. For the next twelve seasons he became a fixture in center field for St. Louis.

Philip Knight Wrigley was born December 5, 1894 in Chicago, IL. Known as P.K. to his close associates, or sometimes Phil, he succeeded his father as president of the chewing gum manufacturing Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company and the Chicago Cubs.

Joseph Floyd Vaughan, was born March 9, 1912 in Clifty, Arkansas and was nicknamed “Arky,” for his home state. He made his major league debut in 1932 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and quickly built a reputation as a superb hitter.

Roland Glen Fingers was born August 25, 1946 in Steubenville, Ohio. Almost as famous for his handlebar mustache as his pitching, the lanky righthander retired as the greatest relief artist in baseball, lasting 17 years. When he finally retired in 1985, Fingers held the major-league records for most career saves with 341 and World Series saves with 7.

Louis Boudreau was born July 17, 1917 in Harvey, Illinois. He won the 1944 American League batting title with a .327 batting average and also led the league in doubles in 1941, 1944, and 1947. He led American League shortstops in fielding 8 times. After his playing and managing career, he was a long-time radio color commentator for the Chicago Cubs of the National League.

Kenesaw Mountain Landis was born November 20, 1866 in Millville, Ohio. Baseball’s first commissioner, Landis was elected to office on November 12, 1920, and helped restore public confidence in baseball following the “Black Sox” scandal of 1919.
